Pokémon developer Game Freak confirms data leak that exposed beta designs, source codes and details on upcoming titles

Game Freak, the developer behind the Pokémon franchise, confirmed that its servers were hacked in August, resulting in a significant data leak that compromised sensitive employee information, beta designs, game source code, and details on upcoming titles. The breach reportedly exposed data going back as far as 30 years, revealing aspects of Pokémon’s development history, including source code for classic titles.

Game Freak is an independent developer that collaborates with both Nintendo and The Pokémon Company. The leak, which has been dubbed “Teraleak” on social media, includes sensitive information such as:

-Source codes for games like Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver.

– Codenames for the Switch 2 and the upcoming Gen 10 Pokémon games—referred to as Ounce and Gaia, respectively.

– References to an in-development Pokémon MMO.

– Internal meeting discussions and confidential company strategies.

The leaked data began appearing on social media platforms like X (formerly Twitter) and Reddit, prompting Game Freak to publicly acknowledge the incident. While neither Nintendo nor The Pokémon Company have issued statements regarding the breach, Game Freak has apologized for the data leak and stated that it is taking steps to enhance its security measures to prevent future breaches.

This incident underscores the importance of robust cybersecurity practices, especially for companies managing valuable intellectual property.
